US university bags contract for defense mapping system

US: The University of New Orleans” (UNO) computer science department has been awarded a five-year, $663,000 research contract by the federal Naval Research Laboratory to develop next-generation defense mapping systems.

“The project builds on UNO”s expertise in geospatial mapping, which refers to various types of map data including satellite photos, sea floor depth, land elevation and roads. The project is expected to use open-source software and commodity hardware or hardware that is relatively affordable and generally compatible with other devices that will let the Navy process more map data faster and more cost effectively than the legacy systems that a lot of agencies are using.
