Bangkok: Latest satellite image shows that the oil spill at Thailand’s Koh Samet island is spreading to the coastal areas of the eastern province of Rayong. Prao Bay, now blackened with oil, has been closed for cleanup, which is expected to take about seven days.
About 50,000 liters, or about 50 tons, of crude oil leaked from an offshore hose that belongs to PTT Global Chemical PCL, a subsidiary of the country’s energy conglomerate – PTT Group – on Saturday morning. The satellite image taken on Monday evening showed a film of crude oil spill — which covers an area of about 15 kilometers, or 9.3 miles — was moving northeast of Koh Samet Island, which is about a mile away from coastal areas of Rayong province, according to data from the country’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency.
