Nigeria: The Abia state government in Nigeria has concluded plans to produce a master plan for the state. It will include digital mapping of Umuahia, the state capital, according to Emeka Nwachukwu, Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Development. Nwachukwu said “Digital mapping will ensure the implementation of the long due transformation and development of the state. This project was suspended because of the paucity of funds. Now, state government has contacted its technical partners from South Africa to come and start physical development and planning of the two cities.”
Further, he added “The government is not going back on its plan to demolish illegal structures. However, we have warned the violators of town planning laws to use this as a window to revalidate their document and remedy their situation because the demolition is expected to start next month.”
He also said that the ministry had sent its ad hoc staff to map out the buildings that would be affected, noting that 90 per cent of such mapping had been completed in Umuahia, while that of Aba had attained 80 per cent completion.
