Turion Space and NanoAvionics to build a satellite for orbital reconnaissance mission

< 1 Minute Read

US companyย Turionย Space,ย aimingย toย buildย spacecraftย toย removeย orbital-debris,ย  satelliteย servicing,ย andย domainย awareness, has selectedย NanoAvionicsย smallย satelliteย bus, the MP42,ย as the basisย forย its โ€˜Droid-1โ€™ย spacecraft designed for a reconnaissance mission in low Earth orbit (LEO). The launch of the Droid-1ย satelliteย is plannedย forย the first quarter of 2023.Using its onboard sensors,ย Turionย Spaceโ€™sย satelliteย will beย ableย toย take extremelyย accurate measurements ofย spacecraftย andย objects in orbit. The data will give operatorsย andย users the exact location of theirย satellitesย andย in relationย toย others, especiallyย at crucial times when twoย spacecraftย are critically close.Future generations of Droidย spacecraftย areย alsoย aimedย at removingย orbitalย debris in LEOย andย tackling the complex logistics of in-orbitย satelliteย servicing, providing orbit-modificationย andย inspection. ย Ryan Westerdahl, CEOย andย co-founder ofย Turionย Space,ย andย aย formerย SpaceX employee, said: โ€œThe exponential growth ofย spacecraftย andย launch vehicles entering Earthโ€™s orbits has dramatically increased the risk of collisions. Evenย aย small number of these conjunctions can endangerย aย sustainableย spaceย environment. Weย are developing the technologyย toย stabilize this threat. Domainย awareness followed by removing space debrisย andย satelliteย servicing is one of the fundamental prioritiesย forย the entire industry.โ€F. Brentย Abbott, CEOย NanoAvionicsย US, said: โ€œNanoAvionicsย is becoming the go-toย partnerย forย NewSpace companies in the US, because of our cost-efficient technology,ย andย our expertiseย asย aย smallsat integratorย andย missionย expert. We collaborate withย andย advise our customers right from the very early phases of their development.โ€œThe removal ofย spaceย debris isย an important issueย forย allย spaceย companies andย Turion Spaceโ€™s Droid-1ย missionย isย aย first step in their plansย toย solve it.ย Atย NanoAvionics, weย also practice proper passiveย andย active de-orbit strategiesย toย do our partย toย keep ourย space resources cleanย andย open.โ€Theย advantageย forย usingย aย satellite, suchย asย Turionย Spaceโ€™s Droid-1, over ground systems suchย as radarsย andย telescopesย toย get domainย awareness data is precise measurements.ย  Ground systems cannot correctly differentiate between closelyย spaced objects.ย At least notย accurately enoughย toย provide precise measurements. Theyย areย also unavailable during bad weatherย andย require geographicย accessibility. The Droidย spacecraft is not limited by these factors.
