Moving up a notch on data processing and analysis

Trimble Realworks What's New

Version 12 of Trimble RealWorks, the company’s flagship point cloud processing and analysis software, makes light work of data processing.

Gathering data is one thing but processing it is whole other ball game. Sometimes, data processing proves to be more challenging than the data gathering itself. Version 12 of Trimble RealWorks point cloud processing and analysis software for 3D laser scanning simplifies data processing. It eases survey workflows by providing a complete solution to efficiently register, analyze, model, and create deliverables using point cloud data from virtually any source.

Time tested

RealWorks has been the go-to tool for surveyors and engineers for over a decade. With automated tools for registration and point cloud cleanup, it allows for efficient working with tools and workflows that are made specifically for point cloud processing. This allows the user to prepare for any project with what is one of the industry’s largest selections of point cloud processing tools that, besides having registration, also includes surface creation, surface-to-surface comparison, and modeling.

RealWorks’ ability to manage massive scan projects and render the point cloud with beautiful shading makes working in the digital world feel very realistic. Point cloud specific tools make the task of navigating 3D point clouds and extracting features much easier than traditional CAD solutions.

Feature packed

The release of version 12 moves the software into the future with a new look and improved capabilities. New dark and light themes for the user interface (UI), a redesigned start and welcome screen, and a fly to navigation tool improve the usability of the software.

The changes go beyond UI and navigation. All-new pipe modeling and editing capabilities allow the user to create and edit pipe runs, elbows, and more with just a couple of clicks. The point cloud/model transparency option helps in adjusting transparency between the point cloud and the 3D model making it much easier to check the accuracy of models as you work. Meanwhile, the user can also manually draw or redraw triangles when editing meshes.

A new machine learning based tool to remove moving objects such as people and vehicles from the scans greatly reduces the need to tediously remove them manually. Machine learning for the steel beam extraction means steel beam segmentation is now faster and more accurate. Further, creating annotations in 3D inspections is now possible for detailed deliverables. Finally, the user can change the empty pixel background in inspection maps to either black or white.

Something for everyone

This Trimble offering has something for everyone; from basic use to heavy, specialized use, as it comes in four different editions. The starting point is the Starter Edition, which itself provides an impressive set of tools for point cloud registration, navigation, and viewing. It includes surface creation and editing, volume calculation, and orthophoto generation.

A step up is the Core Edition, which contains an even more extensive set of point cloud processing and analysis tools over and above the Base Edition. It includes automatic registration for both target-based and target-less projects, automated object classification, advanced drawing tools, a complete set of surface-to-surface and 3D inspection tools, as well as the ability to publish projects for easy sharing.

The Performance Edition includes all tools available in the Advanced Edition, while providing more powerful capabilities and allowing users to add models to their point cloud deliverables with advanced fitting, extraction, and editing of common shapes. It also allows specialty tools for modeling plant-specific objects including safety rails, cages, steel beams, and stairs.

The Storage Tank Edition is a dedicated set of highly automated tools for storage tank inspection and calibration that makes creating reports from scanning data a breeze even for non-scanning professionals. Moreover, it includes all the tools available in the Performance Edition.
