AI, ML finding space in Indian higher education

AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are two technologies that are revolutionizing the digital space and making their presence felt in several sectors, such as manufacturing, healthcare, defense, among others. The growing adoption of these technologies are further opening doors for exciting career opportunities. No wonder some of the premier educational institutions in India are including Ai and ML in higher education.

Recently, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee launched two online certificate programs — Data Science and Machine Learning; and Advanced Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Both the courses are being offered on Coursera – an online learning platform. While Certification in Data Science and Machine Learning is designed to equip professionals with competencies in areas like linear algebra, statistics, gradient calculus and programming, Advanced Machine Learning and AI program uses hands-on learning to teach the advanced ML techniques and skills needed to build AI applications.

Earlier, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras’ Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI (RBCDSAI) collaborated with Narayanan Family Foundation to start a fellowship in Artificial Intelligence for Social Good. The objective of this fellowship is to attract early career AI researchers. The interested candidates can apply for the fellowship by clicking on this link. Reports suggest that recent Ph.D. graduates or early career researchers in computer science, computational and data sciences, biomedical sciences, management, finance, and other engineering branches can apply for the fellowship.

More institutions join the bandwagon

In India, there is a long list of institutions that are currently offering courses in these disruptive technologies. Last month, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) collaborated with AAIC Technologies to launch an online diploma course in AI and ML. Similarly, in February, the Indian Institute of Technology Patna also made an announcement in collaboration with WileyNXT to launch post-graduate certification programmes in Cybersecurity and Blockchain, AI & ML and Big Data Engineering.

Apart from India, educational institutes in other countries too are offering advanced courses in AI and ML. For instance, the Technical University of Munich, Germany, offers MSc Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence. Similarly Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers advanced courses in Human Computational Intelligence, Creating Video Games and Automatic Speech Recognition and University of California, Berkley offers courses in Social Implications of Computer Technology, Impact of AI DeCal and Safety and Control for Artificial General Intelligence. Recently Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has also invited students to apply for their two under-graduate courses in AI application.

Apart from educational institutes, online education apps like upGrad, Holberton, Udemy, deeplearning.ai, Coursera etc. are also making AI and ML affordable as well as accessible to students, who want to learn the basics of the subjects. Soon AI and ML will be the core part of educational institutions world-wide, as the demand grows in industry level.
