Digital Information Network (DIN) in U.S. has announced the only free lightning data available to the public through its desktop application. Digital Information Network allows broadcasters to extend the reach and value of their on-air content with their own Internet convergence technology. This is a free upgrade, released August 10, which allows users to view lighting data at their desktop. This free service to clients and end users, allows residents and businesses to take measures in securing electronic and computer devices before lightning reaches their area. It was released on all DIN applications nationwide covering 90% of U.S. counties.

There are more than 20 million lightning strikes per year. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), lightning causes $4 to $5 billion in losses each year in the civilian sector. NOAA also reports that lightning is number two in weather-related deaths behind flooding, accounting for an average 75 deaths per year. DIN allows clients and end users to view lightning on a national level allowing business owners with multiple offices to prepare for threats nationwide. Using 100 lightning detention sensors strategically located throughout the U.S., these sensors employ a time difference of arrival technology that use high-resolution timing devices with GPS timing as a reference.
