Location Technologies Transforming Retail and Commerce Industry

Location Technologies Transforming Retail and Commerce Industry

Location-based services are one of the emerging technologies that will reshape the retail and commerce sectors in this new decade. 4 ways in which location-based technologies have revolutionized the retail and commerce industries in recent years are-

  • Marketing: One of the most significant ways in which location technology has impacted retail is through location-based marketing. By using a geographic information system (GIS), retailers can target their advertising and promotions to customers based on their geographic location. IKEA, for example, uses geo-location technologies to drive footfalls to its stores. In a limited-time campaign, IKEA UAE used Google Maps Timeline to allow its customers to convert their commute time into currency and make purchases with the accumulated time. The campaign not only increased its footfall but also motivated shoppers to make multiple visits for greater savings.
  • Supply chain management: By using location-based technology, retailers can track the location and status of their products throughout the supply chain, from the manufacturer to the store. This allows them to optimise their logistics operations and ensure that products are delivered to stores in a timely manner. Starbucks has created a digital traceability tool that allows customers to track the origin of their coffee beans. Using their mobile or laptop devices, customers can scan or enter the number on the back of any bag of Starbucks’ whole bean coffee. The app will display information about where the packaged coffee comes from and its entire journey from bean to final bag.
  • E-commerce: In e-commerce, it can help retailers better understand their customer’s preferences and behaviors. By analysing customer data, retailers can identify patterns of customer behaviour and use this information to personalise their marketing campaigns and product offerings. For example, if a customer has been reviewing a product online, they may get a notification that the product is in stock at a nearby store. ZARA stores are equipped with Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID), using cutting-edge systems to track the location of garments instantly and making those most in demand rapidly available to customers. Through the ZARA app and website, customers can check store stocks in real-time, so that they could make purchases online and pick up their selections in-store almost immediately.
  • Inventory management: Retailers can use location technology to track the movement of products throughout their stores. This can help them identify which products are selling well and which are not and make adjustments to their inventory accordingly. For example, Walmart uses an array of sensors, cameras and processors to monitor its product inventory and availability. Using Artificial Intelligence, the system has been trained to detect items on the shelves, recognize the specific product types, and compare the quantities on the shelves to the predicted sales demand. The system automatically triggers out-of-stock notifications to internal apps that alert store employees to re-stock particular items.

Nokia Expands LaaS Solution for Digital Transformation of Enterprises

Nokia announced that it is expanding its Lab-as-a-Service (LaaS) solution to include the validation testing of industrial user equipment and third-party devices connecting people and machines over Nokia digital automation cloud (DAC) and modular private wireless (MPW) networks.

This will allow enterprises to streamline the testing of equipment and Industry 4.0 use cases over private wireless to assess how they will help achieve their digital transformation goals. A dedicated device testing facility in Bangalore, India will allow more customers to accelerate Industry 4.0 service adoption.

Nokia LaaS will enable enterprise customers to assess how devices and equipment working over 4.9G/LTE and 5G private wireless networks, will support their implementation of Industry 4.0 use cases.

Leveraging Nokia Digital Automated Cloud (DAC) and Modular Private Wireless (MPW) customers will be able to see how enterprise, third-party or Nokia Industrial devices such as handhelds, fieldrouters, dongles and wearables will connect machines and people and how that can advance their digitalization journey.

Device validation consists of standardized testing packages. Vertical segments will benefit from Nokia’s extensive network, connectivity knowledge and rapid access to a range of pre-tested validation services. Enterprises can ensure any device functions well within a Nokia private wireless environment, and guarantee they meet the performance requirements of any use case.

The new Nokia LaaS device validation capabilities complement an already extensive range of services supporting chipset, device manufacturers, communication service providers (CSPs) and enterprises who want to introduce new elements in their devices and networks.

These include the development testing of equipment and applications, certification, proof of concept testing of solutions and features and factory acceptance testing.

Industry digitalization enables enterprises to leverage and manipulate their operational technology (OT) to transform processes and achieve business goals.

Widespread implementation of autonomous robots, zero-fault manufacturing, predictive maintenance and other Industry 4.0 use cases rely on the secure real-time connectivity of people and machines using a range of devices. With no investment required by the customer, Nokia LaaS will allow enterprises to test device capabilities in Nokia labs or at their premises.

Nokia LaaS facilities are already in operation in the United States, Europe, South Korea and Japan, Nokia will now expand the service by opening a dedicated device testing facility for enterprise customers in Bangalore, India.

Kitty Weldon, Principal Analyst at GlobalData, said: “The expanded Nokia LaaS solution provides unique benefits to enterprises that are planning to deploy private wireless networks but may be concerned with cost, complexity, or device performance. By providing a complete test environment on an opex basis, enterprises can eliminate much of the expense and worry about how their devices and applications will perform, not just in a theoretical network, but for their specific deployment and use cases. The flexibility of the testing service, which can be performed at a Nokia site or on the customer premise, adds to the ease-of-use. LaaS for enterprises not only provides differentiation for Nokia but should help substantially with customer adoption of private wireless networks for Industry 4.0 digitalization.”

Esri Releases New ArcGIS Reality Software to Capture the World in 3D

Business, government, and science organizations increasingly rely on drones, crewed aircraft, and satellites to capture imagery. Detailed imagery data provides visibility into operations and opportunities, unpacking information from every pixel and transforming static pictures into dynamic digital representations of the world.

3D models and high-resolution maps of construction sites, complex cityscapes, or entire countries allow these organizations to analyze and interact with a digital world that accurately shows places and situations as they are. Layered with geospatial information such as cadastral surveys, utility networks, building information models (BIM), and real-time sensor data, they become digital twins of reality. These enable better understanding of the world through analysis, asset monitoring, or even predictive simulation.

This need to capture reality as the foundation for digital twins is expanding the aerial imaging market, which is expected to grow from $1.4 billion in 2017 to over $4 billion by 2025.

To further support this cross-industry trend, Esri, the global leader in location intelligence technology, is introducing ArcGIS Reality.

“Digital twins have become a critical tool for many industries, and to be effective they rely on highly accurate and up-to-date maps and 3D models derived from imagery,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president. “We are happy to offer this new family of products to the professionals who are digitizing our world to help us all better understand it—whether their operations are large or small, local or global.”
